Message From the Principal - May 30, 2018

Hello JYES Families!

It is hard to believe that we are into the last month of the 2017-18 school year.  I have a number of updates for you at this time.

We are so appreciative of the support we receive from our parent and community volunteers every year.  In recognition of the ongoing dedication of our volunteers, the Staff of JYES would like to invite you to our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on Wednesday, June 20 at 8:00am in the gym. Please see the attached flyer for further information and a response link.

Please see the Principal's Report to School Council attached to this message.  Council and the JYES Staff have given multiple thumbs up to our Active Transportation Plan starting in the fall.  By assembling a committee comprised of staff, parents, students and community members to put a School Travel Plan in place, we hope to positively influence and support active transportation for our school.  Greater detail can be found in the attached report.

Thank you to teacher Whitney Young for inspiring so many to donate their hair to a charity that makes wigs for people who are dealing with cancer. Thank you to the following brave souls who donated their hair:   Staff members:  Ms. Young, Ms. Eritou and Ms. Booth, and students: Mya-Grace, Olivia, Bella, Janice, and Saffron.  Also kudos to parents: Jaime, Arlene and Kirsten (and 2 other anonymous donors). We had a very positive and uplifting assembly last month when the hair was collected.  Nicely done - JYES is such a caring community!

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of our School Council parents, funding from the OCDSB and the City of Ottawa, we will have a new kindergarten play structure in place for September 2018.  Thanks to the kindergarten team for their work with Jaime Routliffe (School Council Co-Chair) in doing the consultation and planning for this structure. Our current play structure is close to the end of its lifespan, and we were concerned that it would be closed and removed after this summer inspection for safety reasons.  We are really excited about this makeover on this yard, home to 200 active and curious kindergarten students.  Stay tuned!

We are looking forward to our Grade 6 Leaving Ceremony slated for 6-7:30 pmWednesday, June 27 at AY Jackson SS.  This is a chance to say goodbye, reflect,  and mark a special transition for our oldest students.  Thanks to our School Council for volunteering and providing refreshments for the event.  Please see the attached Invitation for this special evening.

Thanks also to Council for completely funding the Grade 6 year-end trip by coordinating fundraisers in collaboration with the grade 6 students.

Starting in early July, there will be active construction on site in the parking lot area and around the portables.  The new asphalt pad will be set up where 6 more portables will be located in the future.  As far as we know, only one portable will be erected for September (but registrations come in daily!).  Also, the parking lot will be expanded with an emergency road and a new fire hydrant on site.  All of this will be in place for September.  As you know, the enrolment at JYES is steadily growing due to the new developments to the south and west of the school.  It is worth noting that we did reduce the number of portables required by relocating the Gifted Program.  While your children are out playing this summer, please remind them to stay away from the yard while this construction is going on.

Now that warmer weather is finally here, I hope you are all enjoying this spring and the outdoors.  If you have any questions or concerns about any of this information please do not hesitate to contact me at any time.
