Programs at the Hazeldean library
Posted on 09/06/2019

Welcome back everyone to a brand new school year!

Students from your school were busy reading this summer. At the Hazeldean Branch we registered almost 800 children for the TD Summer Reading Club and over the summer, they reported reading over 10,000 books. Some of the children also attended programs this summer to feed their passions in reading, writing, science, innovation, art and lots more.

The Ottawa Public Library offers free programs all year round. Here are some of the programs happening this fall at the Hazeldean Branch:

Homework Help / Aide aux devoirs

Tutoring, reading support, and homework help. Ages 6 - 12. Led by Frontier College. Wednesdays 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Drop-in. / Tutorat, aide avec la lecture et les devoirs. Pour les 6 - 12 ans. Avec des bénévoles de Frontier College. Les mercredi 16:00h - 17:30h Inscription non requise.

Maker Mobile: Codemaker with Scratch

Children will learn to program their own interactive stories and games. In the process, they will learn to solve problems, design projects and express themselves creatively on laptops. We will provide the laptops for this workshop, so access to other computers is not necessary. Les élèves apprendront à programmer leurs propres histoires et jeux interactifs. Ils apprendront à résoudre des problèmes, à conceptualiser et exprimer leur créativité à l’aide d'un ordinateur portable. Ages 9-12.

The uOttawa Maker Mobile is a Makerspace on wheels. Carrying the latest technologies, the Maker Mobile delivers fun hands-on learning activities in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. Le Maker Mobile uOttawa est un Makerspace en mouvement. Transportant des technologies avancées, il offre des activités d’apprentissage pratiques et amusantes à travers la région d’Ottawa-Gatineau.

Chess in the Library

Play Chess at the Library and receive instructions from local players to improve your game. No experience required. Boards provided. Ages 6 – 12

Who Done It? Book Club

Join us for this evening book club. Solve the clues and see if you can figure out who the real culprit is. We will read a different mystery each month and then get together for discussion, code-breaking, games and more. Ages 9 to 12. Registration required.

If you know a child or a family who might be interested in one of these programs, please feel free to share.

Also, you might want to check out FOPLA’s second hand bookstore at the Hazeldean Branch for great prices on children’s books in English and French.

Thank you and see you soon at the library.
