Dear Families,

Thank you for another great week of learning and growing!  We had our first of three fall fire drills this week.  Students did a wonderful job of exiting the building calmly and safely. We will also be having our fall lockdown practice in the coming weeks.  Our goal is to practice so that everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency.  

Meet the Staff Event Postponed

Due to the potential for a fall reorganization that may impact class placements, we have made the decision to postpone the Meet the Staff event until after any changes are made.  We will share further information after we have received more information from the OCDSB Elementary Staffing team.  Please note that the School Council Welcome Back BBQ will still be held on Thursday, September 25 from 4 to 6:30 pm.  We hope you can join us!

Terry Fox Event

On Friday Oct 3rd, we will hold our annual Terry Fox Run. Students will run around the perimeter of our school yard and collect ‘stamps’ from each Canadian province and territory as they go. We run to remember Terry Fox’s determination and to raise funds for cancer research. Families may wish to donate at this link (Terry fox fundraising page) or students can bring in ‘Toonies for Terry’. Thank you for your support of this worthy cause!

Extracurricular Sports 

Junior Soccer Intramurals and Tryouts - Forms to complete

If your child is in grades 4, 5, or 6 and would like to participate in soccer intramurals and/or tryouts at recess times, please fill out this Soccer Sport Consent Form. This form must be completed for your child to participate.

Grade 3-6 Cross Country Running - Forms to complete 

If your child is in grades 3-6 and would like to participate in Cross Country Running practices at recess times, please fill out this Cross Country Sport Consent Form. 

You will also be prompted to complete the Student and Parent Concussion Forms. Please note, you will need to fill out BOTH Concussion Forms once per year for each child attending John Young.

Annually, student and parent concussion forms need to be completed before students can participate in extracurricular activities such as sports or field trips such as skating.  Please complete each form for each of your children that attends John Young as soon as possible.

In case you missed it…

Student Emergency Information Forms

Last week your child brought home a paper copy of Guardians’ Emergency Contact Verification form.  Please review this important information and return it to school as soon as possible so that we can ensure that we have up-to-date contact information for all students.  Please make any changes directly on the form.  If there are no changes, please check the box on the top right.  Please disregard the doctor/dentist information section.

Media and Technology Forms

Thank you to all of our families who have already submitted the media and technology forms.  If you have not yet completed these forms for your child, please do so right away.

Upcoming PA Day

Please note that Monday, September 29 is a PA Day and there will be no school for students.

SafeArrivals

The SchoolMessenger SafeArrivals system to report student absences is back up and running after some technical difficulties last week.  Please use the SafeArrivals tools to notify the office of any student absences.  Please note - if you child will be late to school, you still enter them as absent for the day and our office staff will make the adjustment to attendance when your child arrives.
