Principal's Message

Happy New Year everyone.
It was a great first week back here at John Young. It is unfortunate that the weather has been so challenging over the past few days!

We are excited to be planning our Kindergarten Information Night for Thursday, January 18 @ 6 pm in the gym.  If you have a child who is turning 4 years old in 2018, please consider attending our information evening here at the school.  Parents are urged to register their child by the following week (Jan 22-26) so we may plan our staffing appropriately for September. Please tell your neighbours as well if they have a 4-year-old so they can drop by and register.  On Thursday night, current kindergarten staff and administration will start with a presentation in the gym.  Parent members of School Council will also make a short presentation and have information for you.  You will then visit some classrooms and ask any questions for clarification.   We will be offering another visit to the classrooms to do some activities in May for those parents of registered children.  I recommend that you bring your kindergarten child to the May visit and not the one in next week as there is a lot of time spent sitting during the presentation, and it is challenging for children to sit quietly for that amount of time.  I am looking forward to seeing some of you next week.

On occasion, the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority cancels bus and van transportation for students in our district.  This happened for the first time on Thursday.   Schools are open on these days for students to attend but transportation is canceled for the entire day.  If you drop your student off in the morning, you must also make arrangements to pick them up at the end of the day no later than 3:30 that afternoon.  It is also important to note that if you arrive earlier than the bell at 3:15, we are required to have you sign them out in the office.  I respectfully ask you to try to avoid picking your child up between 3-3:15 on these days because this leads to tremendous congestion in the office while we call your child to the office and do the sign-out.  While we know there will need to be exceptions, please do everything that you can to pick up your child between 3:15-3:30 pm on these days.  Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

And finally, with all of the political comments made recently in the media that are either racially-charged or just plain racist in nature, we are standing up as a school and a diverse and accepting community here at JYES on Monday, Jan 15,  Martin Luther King Day.  In the announcements this morning I said:  : "Good morning Colts!  Martin Luther King Day is on Monday, January 15. Martin Luther King was an advocate. He helped to give a voice to black people to speak up in a peaceful way for their own human rights. Let’s wear orange on Monday to say that we believe in Human rights - for everyone. Let’s remember that as we move through this day. We are all human beings. All Colts. And we believe - like Martin Luther King - that the true character of a person is what is on the inside and not based on the colour of our skin. WEAR ORANGE MONDAY. "
Staff members will be making specific reference in the coming days and weeks to the OCDSB Community of Character Wheel in many of their lessons to promote acceptance for our diverse community.  If you want to continue the conversation at home, please see the wheel at:
Thanks so much for your partnership in education.  Have a fantastic weekend.
