Literacy Learning Update #3
Literacy Learning - Home Connections
This week, we continue our focus on Alphabetic Principles. Letter recognition is the ability to recognize the letters of the alphabet by their shape and orientation. Developing automaticity in this area takes time as students have 52 letters (uppercase and lowercase) to learn and many of them are visually similar. By introducing upper and lowercase letters together, we expose children to both forms of letters and begin the work of pairing the two forms in their minds. Games and activities that practice upper and lowercase letters together are a great way to support this.
- Play ‘Memory’, looking to match uppercase letters and lowercase letters
- Fill a ‘Tic-Tac-Toe’ grid with letters and as you play, have your child say the letter name and letter sound
- Practice saying a sound, and have your child write the letter that is associated
