Weekly message to Families - Oct 3
Dear Families,
Welcome to October! The first month of school has flown by in a flash and we are looking forward to continuing learning and growing as a school community during our second month of school. Today our students and staff participated in the annual Terry Fox Run. This was a fantastic event with beautiful weather and tremendous participation! A big thank you to our staff organizers and our student leaders who made the day a success. We really appreciate the generosity of our students and families in supporting Cancer Research. We look forward to sharing the grand total of donations next week when we have tallied the results.
World Teacher Day
On Sunday, October 5 we will recognize World Teacher Day. We know you join us in celebrating the ongoing work of all of our John Young educators. Their dedication, creativity, and commitment to students is commendable.
School Reorganization
Every fall, as part of the annual OCDSB staffing timelines, enrollment numbers across the District are reviewed to assess whether or not class projections have been met. We have been fortunate to welcome more students than originally projected at our school this year in our French Immersion program. This means that we have an increase in our teacher staffing allocation and we will be adding a junior French Immersion classroom.
Over the next few days, our school team will work through this reorganization of classes and we will be contacting all impacted families directly with further information. We understand that a change in classes can be disruptive and upsetting to some students. We are committed to ensuring as smooth a transition as possible for everyone involved.
Loading Zone for Specialized Transportation
Thank you to families for ensuring a safe transition to and from school by respecting pylons and posted signage both in the parking lot, and at the Kiss and Ride area. Please note that the area of the parking lot near the school is a no stopping zone. This area is used for the daily pick up and drop off of students who access specialized transportation vans. If you are accessing the parking lot, please park in a designated space.
School Photos - Monday October 6th
On Monday, all students in kindergarten to grade 6 will have their individual photo taken. Photo retake day will take place on November 21st, which is also when class pictures will occur.
Breakfast Club at JYES has started
Every day between 8:30 and 8:45 am, students are welcome to come into the Breakfast Club room for a grab and go breakfast. Anyone is welcome to join! If your child attends Breakfast Club on any given day, we will send home a letter so that you can inform our Breakfast Monitor of any allergies.
In case you missed it…
Trading Cards
We are asking students to keep Pokemon cards and other trading cards at home. This will help avoid conflicts around trading and lost/damaged cards. It also allows students to focus on active play at recess and reduces distractions during learning times. Thank you for your support in keeping trading cards at home.
Gym Footwear
Students in all grades participate in Physical Education activities that require proper footwear - shoes which are secure to the foot and that provide good traction. Please be sure to send your child with a pair of running shoes so that they may participate safely in the gym and outdoors.
Have a wonderful weekend. Please continue reading for important messages from our hard working School Council team.

Join us on Friday, October 24th for the first JYES Family Dance! The dance will be in the gym from 6-8pm. Entry will be $2 per person or $5 per family. FALL CAKE RAFFLE - Thursday, October 30th
The Cake Raffle is back!! School Council transforms the gym into a bake shop where students have the chance to win their treat of choice. Donated baked goods and non-food items are displayed in the gym and students put their purchased raffle tickets into the raffle bag in front of the items they like. Tickets can be purchased starting Monday, October 27th for $0.25 each or five for $1.00. The draw will be done at the end of the day and winners will bring their prizes home! Please note that this is a raffle and not a bake sale so not all students will win a treat or non-food item. ALLERGY NOTE: Students with allergies (or from households with allergies) may ask their teacher for coloured tickets. There will be a selection of non food items and guaranteed nut free items available in the raffle.
We are looking for VOLUNTEERS AND DONATIONS!! Donations of cakes, cupcakes, cookies, packaged food that is nut-free or meets other dietary requirements (e.g, Halal, vegan, etc) and non-food items can be dropped off at the School Gym on Thursday, October 30th between 8:30am and 8:45am. Please include the list of ingredients for food items. If you are interested in volunteering for the Fall Cake Raffle, please contact School Council at sc-johnyounges@ocdsb.ca.
